How To Retrieve Data From MacBook HDD Using Target Disk Mode And Hard Disk Recovery

Target disk mode is a useful way for mounting and accessing a defective hard drive using accessories, which includes a Firewire or Thunderbolt cable that connects the 2 Macs (a good Mac disk and a failed Mac disk) for transfer of files.

Learn how to connect two Macs using Firewire cables:

  1. Make sure that uninterrupted power is supplied to both Macs.
  2. Use a Firewire 400 or 800 cables for connecting both Macs via USB ports. You can also use a Thunderbolt to do the same.
  3. Start the Mac with a failed/defective hard drive followed by pressing ‘T’ button right after.
  4. The Mac should start in Firewire mode, and as it does, you are going to see a large ‘Firewire’ icon on your MacBook screen.
  5. On a good Mac, you are going to see the bad hard drive icon on the desktop. The 'Macintosh HD' is also going to have a Firewire symbol that will be mounted on its icon. If you are using Thunderbolt cable, the Thunderbolt icon will be mounted on the Macintosh HD.
  6. As the Macintosh HD mounts, you can begin with disk repairing process along with copying the files from your HDD to a functional HDD or any other drive that you have selected for the task.

Mounting and copying files from a failed hard disk to a working Mac disk seems convenient with the Target Disk Mode feature. However, if the hard disk doesn’t mount or remains unrecognized, you may want to consider taking help from data recovery service in Pittsburgh to recover files from an unmounted hard drive.
